Will Smith and Denzel Washington Heading Uptown Saturday Night?

denzel-washingtonWay back in 2002, Will Smith purchased remake rights to Sidney Poiter and Bill Cosby’s 1970s comedy Uptown Saturday Night. Not much has been done since, however, it has been known for some time Denzel Washington and Smith have been searching for a project to work on. According Pajiba, Uptown Saturday Night could be it.

The original starred Poiter and Cosby has two friends who visit an illegal nightclub and have a winning lottery ticket taken from their wallets. Hilarity ensues!

Could this be the project fans have long waited for? The prospect of Will Smith starring alongside Denzel Washington in a film is a pretty brilliant idea: as long as it isn’t turned into a smug-fest by Smith and they actually turn in a decent script and film. Washington isn’t particularly well suited to comedy, although he was funny in Training Day (in a scary way). Smith has more than proved his skills as a light comedian down the years.

As it is very early days (and just rumour), don’t be expecting this film any time soon. Both actors are incredibly busy for the forseeable future and it could all turn to nothing. Smith and Washington in a film together is pretty darn cool.
