Interesting stuff, this. According to Bleeding Cool, Watchmen is to become a franchise series…in graphic novel form. Last year’s film adaptation by Zack Snyder was very loyal to its origins, but upon second viewing produced shrugs in this writer’s shoulders. DC Comics see things differently and view the success of the film as portent to a new franchise. The film was very expensive, so don’t be expecting a new cinematic outing any time in the next two thousand years, but will fans flock to read all about Nite Owl, The Comedian and Rorschach kicking arse? DC Comics’ head honcho (super villain), Dan Didio, is plotting such a nefarious scheme!
But isn’t this misunderstanding the intent of the original 1980s work? It was supposed to be a novel told in a different way. Alan Moore has seen his work butchered in the past and refuses any contact or credit with film studios. Illustrator and co-creator, Dave Gibbons, worked closely with the film creatives, but this is a different kettle of fish.
Will fans be up in arms over this or is nobody bothered? Is it a good thing? Can we expect referencing puns like, “A legendary graphic novel was killed tonight”? if this goes ahead? Maybe it’s all a load of hogwash swilled down with bullshit? Somebody should give Rorschach (Alan Moore in disguise) a call on the blower and inform him Dan Didio has been hanging around school gates*
What does the future hold for Watchmen?
*not true, so please don’t sue!
