Say what you like about 2009′s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, sure, it was corny as hell, but it was also one of the most enjoyable films of the year. What Stephen Sommers did with G.I. Joe was to literally place a colorful collection of action figures on screen in a way that no director had done for a long time, and that in itself is a real achievement.
With that in mind, hopefully some of you will be pleased to hear that Deadpool writers, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been signed on to pen the sequel. The pair, also writers of last year’s comedy horror Zombieland, broke the news while speaking to IESB, this from them:
IESB has exclusively learned that not only are these two writing the script for the Merc with the Mouth, they’ve also just been handed the sequel to G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA that hit theaters this past August with Stephen Sommers at the helm.
We’ve reached out to Paramount and WME and are awaiting further comment.
While that last statement suggests that this should be treated as rumour for the time being it does sound pretty solid from where I’m standing. And with the tedious origin story now played out, hopefully the G.I. Joe sequel can deliver more of what the fans want – crazy gadgets, cheesy lines and a Cobra Commander with the correct headgear!

Hey Craig, maybe YOU though what Sommers did was some kind of an achievement and it gave the audience what it wanted, but comic book fans just saw yet ANOTHER desecration of one of our favorite titles. This was just a cheesy cimematic cartoon, not a faithful adaptation of Larry Hama's comic book storyline, which is what fans REALLY want. Hopefully Stuart Beattie being replaced by two writers who actually know comic books means the studio has heard the complaints from the fans. Now all we need is for that hack Sommers to be replaced as well! I hope the sequel has better dialogue, more believable action, plotlines and character development taken right from the pages of the comics(similar to Batman Begins and Sin City), and most importantly — Snake Eyes and Scarlett's romance finally brought to life onscreen the way it appears in the comics! That thing with Ripcord was an embarrassment, much like the Duke/Scarlett travesty from the cartoons. The comic book writers have done 75% of the work for the filmakers already, so there's no need to do anything differently. Stick to the story from the comics, gentlemen!
