In 1985, Michael J. Fox starred in a werewolf movie. Yes, he played a “wolfman” and set in a high school. People didn’t think it was weird that he looked more like JoJo the Dog-Faced Boy than a boy cursed with lupine features with lust for blood. They celebrated it. The “werewolf goes to high school” movie is a genre less travelled.
MTV have been plotting to bring it back to the screen; the television screen, that is. The project has landed a director for its pilot feature-length episode. It’s, drum roll please…Russell Mulcahy!!!
The Aussie helmer whose biggest claim to directorial fame is Highlander has been given the megaphone and chair to bring a twenty-five year old film that probably hardly any kids remember to their t.v. screens on a weekly basis (provided it does suck and get cancelled!)
Tyler Posey is playing the high school kid with problems alongside Dylan O’Brien and Taylor Hoechlin. In a slight alteration from the original storyline, Scott (Posey) is attacked and bitten by a werewolf and does not inherit the totally radical affliction from his dad.
Whether this sinks or floats and becomes a sensation is down to a lot of things. Somebody should have called in Joss Whedon for this. His work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel has proved to be a massive influence on most of today’s supernatural-meets-teen world market.
