Steven Spielberg has signed up for his next project (once he’s through with The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn of course), and the project involves an imaginary white Rabbit who’s 6 foot 3 inches tall!
Spielberg will be lensing a fresh adaptation of Mary Chase’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Harvey” for 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks. The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944, and was originally turned into the 1950 Universal film that starred Jimmy Stewart and Josephine Hull.
It is the story of an amiable eccentric, Elwood P. Dowd, and his friendship with a six and one-half foot tall invisible rabbit, and how it affects every member of his family and community.
“I am very happy to be working again with my friend Tom Rothman who shepherded us through `Minority Report,’ and with Elizabeth and Carla, who I’m looking forward to collaborating with,” Spielberg said. “DreamWorks has experienced a creative and profitable relationship with 20th Century Fox in the past, and I look forward to renewing that time together.”
With Tintin already in post-production, Spielberg is ready to roll with this new project, casting and pre-production are set to begin immediately, and production starting in early 2010.

I have a real bad feeling about this. Harvey is a great film and although I am sure the new film will interpret things differently to the original I think it will certainly struggle. Plus the great Jimmy Stewart made the character of Elwood P. Dowd his own both on stage & screen, so anyone who takes on this role will have a big job of not coming across as a poor imitation. For me the only actor who may be able to do justice to this role would be Tom Hanks.
But I hope this gets canned before it get’s any further.
I’ll be honest – I’ve never seen the original. I checked out the trailer earlier before I posted the story and it looks very much like a chipper classic from the good ol’ days, how well it will translate for today’s demanding audiences however, I have no idea!
