The JJ Abrams’ Star Trek reboot has barely been out a week, and already the sequel rumours are beginning to fly! Movieweb spoke recently with Bruce Greenwood, otherwise known as “Captain Pike”, senior and mentor to Chris Pine’s “Captain Kirk” and he hinted at a possible story thread for the sequel.
According to Greenwood, the second film in the rebooted franchise could well look deeper into Captain Pike’s story, as well as the story of another former Enterprise captain:
Greenwood hinted that Pike’s personal story, as it pertains to this version of the new Star Trek timeline, would be tied directly into Captain Robert April, who, according to the Star Trek animated series, was the original Captain of the Starship Enterprise.
Now, I’m no Trekkie, but according to Movieweb Captain April only ever showed up in one episode of the animated series. Add that to the fact that most hardcore Trekkies don’t consider the cartoon to be of proper Star Trek canon and could we have another less than fan friendly film on our hands? Movieweb explains:
April was only seen in one episode of the animated series. His voice was supplied by James Doohan, otherwise known as Scotty, and in the Star Trek Encyclopedia, his profile is accompanied by a picture of series creator Gene Roddenberry in a Starfleet uniform. Neither Paramount nor Roddenberry ever considered the animated series part of the official Star Trek cannon, which has led to debate about April’s place as the first captain of the Enterprise.
Check back soon as no doubt there’ll be more Star Trek speculation afoot!
