Romero's Latest Zombie Flick Rises Spring 2010

survival-of-the-deadMagnet Releasing have bagged distribution rights to George A. Romero’s latest zombie flick, Survival of the Dead. Variety report the company will unleash the film sometime during the Spring. Romero pretty much owns the “zombie” sub-genre and over the past forty years, has produced six films as pretexts to discuss contemporary issues.

Survival of the Dead centres on two families attempting to live away from the zombie hordes, but as slowly and surely as the dead walk, things do not go to plan. The two groups have differing ideologies and approaches to the nightmare they face. Is Romero commenting on religious beliefs? He’s already had a pop at consumerism, materialism and the media, so it looks like it is time for a new spin on things. One of the joys of his zombie features are the subtextual themes so prevalent within them. They work as genre pieces and yet offer the viewer something more to…chew on? The monsters might be mindless and stupid – the films aren’t. Survival of the Dead made appearances at the Venice and Toronto film festivals a few months ago.

Magnet Releasing will put Survival of the Dead out on Video on Demand a full month before it has a traditional cinema release.
