William S. Burroughs: A Man Within – Trailer

Idolised by the likes of Kurt Cobain and Patti Smith, William S. Burroughs remains one of the most notorious and influential writers of the 20th Century. He wrote nightmarish books about drug addiction and sex, including Naked Lunch, filmed by David Cronenberg in 1991.

William S. Burroughs: A Man Within is a well-crafted, brand new documentary which attempts to open up the legendary figure and see what made him tick. Showing at the 54th BFI London Film Festival, Yony Leyser’s film is a riveting and emotional journey into the world of a man many considered as cold as an iceberg on a winter night.

Mixing up unseen footage, animated sequences and the input and opinion of John Waters, Gus Van Sant, David Cronenberg, Patti Smith, Jello Biafra, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson and Peter Weller, it is bound to be an arthouse hit.

FilmShaft has seen the movie and you can read our review right here.

Synopsis:

”The film investigates the life of legendary beat author and American icon, William S. Burroughs. Born the heir of the Burroughs’ adding machine estate, he struggled throughout his life with addiction, control systems and self. He was forced to deal with the tragedy of killing his wife and the repercussions of neglecting his son. His novel, Naked Lunch, was one of the last books to be banned by the U.S. government. Allen Ginsberg and Norman Mailer testified on behalf of the book. The courts eventually overturned their decision in 1966, ruling that the book had important social value. It remains one of the most recognized literary works of the 20th century.”

Could Joseph Gordon-Levitt Be The Riddler?

Riddle me this, bat-fans. What’s tall, dark, oh forget it. Word on the internet grapevine is actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is on Christopher Nolan’s shortlist to play none other than the nefarious prankster, The Riddler, in Batman 3. Of course it won’t be called Batman 3, but that’s what we’ll call it for lack of a proper title…for now.

Gordon-Levitt proved he could play a villain in Stephen Sommers ridiculous but entertaining if you’re brain dead film, G.I. JOE: Rise of Cobra. In fact, he was best thing in the entire film giving it a level of respect and knowing-ness it might not have achieved otherwise.

Hollywood Life are the peeps spreading this “rumour” like horse muck on a bed of roses. Will produce a news-story or remain festering like, well, shit. If there’s a modicum of truth to the story, then it’s very cool news indeed.

However it smacks of being premature. The film’s script is still being devised and maybe the rumor came about simply because Gordon-Levitt stars in Christopher Nolan’s next big flick – Inception. We won’t be seeing a new Batman until summer 2012, so it’s a long way to go yet, folks.

“Harry Potter” Scribe Signed To Brush Up “Akira” Script

The writer responsible for seven out of the eight Harry Potter films (missing only “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix“), Steve Kloves has been hired to add a little spit and polish to the script for the long awaited AKIRA live action film.

Kloves will take over work on the script written by Albert Torres (“Henry Poole is Here“) and previously, “Iron Man” scriptwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. The project, currently gestating over at Warner Bros. is set to be directed by Albert and Allen Hughes whose most recent project, “The Book of Eli” was not quite the hit that everyone was expecting, leading some fans to wonder whether an Americanized adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s original, epic graphic novel is even going to work.

Of course another thing to consider is Kloves’ work on the Harry Potter series, while the films themselves are undeniably box office gold, Kloves took more than one or two liberties with the source material, cutting more sub-plots and details from each film as they went on – could we see a similarly ruthless cull of the plot-heavy Akira?

The original film, is set in a futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019 and follows the story of Shotaro Kaneda, a biker gang member intent on stopping Tetsuo Shima from releasing Akira, a child with immense telekinetic abilities. The big screen, Americanized adaptation will move the setting from Tokyo to Neo-Manhattan.

I’m still relatively optimistic about the project at this stage for the simple fact that, despite the years of rumors, this film is very much in it’s infancy. With major casting announcements and production schedules still to be released we are a way off from seeing anything concrete. Stay tuned for more updates!
