Joe Kosinski Talks Tron: Legacy Sequel

Tron: Legacy was without a doubt one of Disney’s most tainted successes of 2010, sure I loved the movie, but there were many who didn’t. Regardless, it still made a pile of cash at the box office, becoming highest grossing live-action film of all time for a first-time director, but this was largely due to the marketing campaign and the army of faithful bloggers pushing the film out into the far corners of the Internet.

With Tron still to hit the DVD and Blu-ray market, Disney have yet to make a decision on whether or not a sequel will get the go ahead, regardless of this, Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, has already started work on the as yet untitled Tron 3.

Talking to Assignment X, the director announced that he is currently working on a third script and shared his thoughts about where the property could go from here:

“Dillinger [David Warner] was a really important part of the first film and felt like an easy way to continue that story line and thread to have his son in the new movie. That way you have people ask those questions of what the Dillinger legacy is in the world of Tron. We didn’t want to ignore it completely and it leaves a really nice springboard for some intertwining development for the next film.”

Another thing he seems happy to share with the world is his proposed villain. Given the long-held opinion of fans that Cillian Murphy would reprise his as-yet un-credited role as Dillinger’s son, you’ll not be surprised to hear that this line of thinking seems to be spot on the mark:

“Dillinger [David Warner] was a really important part of the first film and felt like an easy way to continue that story-line and thread to have his son in the new movie,” says Kosinski. “That way you have people ask those questions of what the Dillinger legacy is in the world of TRON. We didn’t want to ignore it completely and it leaves a really nice springboard for some intertwining development for the next film.”

So while the film has still to be given a green light, and Kosinski has yet to be signed onto the project as director, you can sleep easy in the knowledge that someone, somewhere is already planning our next trip to the grid!

First Look: Fast Five Image Online

Who likes cars? I don’t. But I know lots of people that do. I did like David Cronenberg’s Crash but that turned the term ‘auto erotica’ into a whole new genre. Any-hoo, Universal have ‘pimped their ride’ for the fifth time with Fast Five – the latest installment in their ‘crimes n’ fast cars’ saga. Vin Diesel returns and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson joins the cast too. Take a look at the staring competition going off between them in this first look official image. Who wins?

Justin Lin is directing again and Universal bumped The Thing prequel to make way for this title in the April 29th slot in the US and we Brits will see it from 10th June, 2011. Lin told US Today all about the joy of casting Johnson:

***
“People thought it would be impossible to get Dwayne. But he didn’t show up looking to cash a paycheck. That’s pretty amazing, for a star like him to join the fifth part of a franchise. That says a lot about him and the fans.”
***

So what’s it all about, I hear you ask? Turns out – according to USA Today – Johnson’s character is a copper tracking down the petrol heads and he rolls around town in what has been described as “a 10-ton armored military vehicle that looks like a Humvee on steroids.” Clearly he can afford a gas guzzler. But what about the environment, dudes? Why not go electric?

The Dark Knight Rises To Shoot In Imax

Here’s an interesting piece of movie news, readers. The Dark Knight looked awesome on Imax didn’t it. Remember that vertiginous opening shot? According to sources, Christopher Nolan wants to shoot The Dark Knight Rises entirely in the format. Several scenes in the classic second picture utilized Imax but not the rest was transferred.

There are plenty of technological factors to overcome in making Nolan’s dream come true. The fact Imax cameras are loud, massive and lack grace in the movement department, should be noted. But again according to the report Imax have been working on creating a lighter model of camera allowing the director to execute his plans.

He’s wisely rejected shooting in 3D (yay!) and perhaps the knowledge The Dark Knight rocked the house in Imax, cinema-goers will flood to see it. As Richard Zanuck once told me: “It’s a slam dunk”. Nolan has been quoted saying:

***
“We’re looking to do something technologically that’s never been done before.”
***

Is that a clue? In other Batman news: Nolan has been meeting up with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman and Keira Knightley to choose who’ll play Bruce Wayne’s love interest and also a major villain.

No word yet on who’ll win the prize roles but my money is on Anne Hathaway. She’s great!
