Michael Sheen Talks Alice In Wonderland
Not content with plugging his role in the highly anticipated The Twilight Saga: New Moon, Michael Sheen has begun the build up to the big event that is Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland in which Sheen plays the role of the White Rabbit. Speaking to Parade, the Brit actor said:
“I’m doing the White Rabbit in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Everyone has an inner white fluffy animal, it’s just a question of finding it before it’s too late.”
“The White Rabbit is such an iconic character that I didn’t feel like I should break the mould too much, so I just sort of went with it.”
“The story had a huge impact on me as a child and it’s stayed with me ever since, so to be part of Tim Burton’s version is just like a dream come true.”
Director Tim Burton has attempted to work his gothic style over one of the best loved stories of all time… Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There’, which first told the story of a young girl, who after following a rabbit down a hole, is transported to a strange world.
Whilst the old Disney film version of the tale relied on sweetness and light to delight the audience, Burton fans can be sure to look out for the same cartoon traits as his earlier masterpiece ‘The Nightmare before Christmas‘.
The traditional tale has been traded in for a sequel with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton. The plot will surround a 19 year old Alice, attending a party at a Victorian estate, only to find she is about to be proposed to in front of hundreds of snooty guests. So she runs away, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.
Amongst those who welcome her back is the Mad Hatter, a role tailor-made for Johnny Depp as he collaborates with Burton for the seventh time. Another personal favourite of mine, Stephen Fry plays the Cheshire Cat.
Aussie actress Mia Wasikowska, 19, has taken the top role as Alice herself. The actress, who is relatively unknown in the UK, will surely see this as her big chance to break into the big time.
Helena Bonham Carter plays the Red Queen, whose favourite retort is famously “Off with their heads.”
Producer Richard Zanuck has recently come out to say that despite the new dark on the twist on the movie, it will still be suitable for most children.
The films is due for release in the UK on 5th March 2010 and will be released in 3D.
