It was back in January when this site (formerly known as Original Sharp Says) announced that Danny Boyle’s DNA Films had picked up the rights to the mega Brit sci-fi series – Judge Dredd. At the time Boyle sadly made it abundantly clear that regardless of his companies involvement, he would not be stepping in to direct.
Since then, all has been silent on the Judge Dredd project, until now. Kevin Smith, during his 24 hours tweet-a-thon spoke to comic book artist Mark “Jock” Simpson about the project, and once again is seems like Twitter is surly becoming the #1 source for breaking news:
@jock4twenty working through script visuals for JUDGE DREDD movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.
Alex Garland, writer of “The Beach” and “28 Days Later” is now apparently also the writer on DNA Films’ new Judge Dredd project, not only that but word has reached my ears that while Boyle might not be directing, he could well be producing the picture, which will be Dredd’s second big screen outing following the so-so 1995 outing starring Sylvester Stallone, Armand Assante and Rob Schneider.
To an age old Dredd fan this is music to my ears, I’ve longed for a faithful Dredd movie for as long as I’ve been reading the comics. Although unlike most Dredd fans I’d rather they didn’t start by featuring Judge Death as the antagonist – rather save him for a later installment and start of with a “Batman Begins” kind of vibe.
What do you think? Should DNA quit while there ahead or is there a chance we could get a reall Judge Dredd film to be proud of?
