Is George Clooney The New Jack Ryan?

clooney1Cast your mind back to 2002 and The Sum of All Fears, starring Ben Affleck, Morgan Freeman and James Cromwell. The film was a critical and commercial success, but despite that fact we haven’t seen Tom Clancy’s iconic hero Jack Ryan on the big screen since. Until now.

According to The Daily Beast, George Clooney has voiced an interest in playing CIA agent Ryan if, and when Paramount should ever wish to bring the character back to the big screen. Last I heard, Paramount had been attempting to reboot the Jack Ryan series with a younger, more action packed version of the character – and Clooney isn’t getting any younger!

At 50, could Clooney really pull the character off? I mean he’s certainly perfect to play an older Jack Ryan, and should Paramount choose to go down that route I could definitely see it working, but what about their plans for a younger, fresher faced action hero? Should those plans take a back seat in favour of A-List celebrity interest?
