Iron Man Screenwriters Working On Akira
The Akira project isn’t dead after all.
Back in June of this year fanboys around the world were grieving the loss of Warner Bros. live action Akira adaptation, based on the hugely popular Manga series. 15th June 2009 was the day it was confirmed that director Ruairi Robinson had left the project, and according to horror site Bloody Disgusting, the project was “dead as a doornail”.
The troopers over at Collider have momentous news – according to their own sources, “Children of Men” and “Iron Man” screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are currently hard at work on the Akira script! Not only have Collider been able to confirm that the project is alive and well, but should script development go well, the film should go into production in 2010 with a release date in 2011. The gospel according to Frosty:
Also, while I couldn’t get a lot of info about what changes are being made from the anime to make the feature film work, I did confirm the story is still set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan in the near future. I also confirmed the famous motorcycle is definitely a part of the film, but that bit of info shouldn’t surprise anyone.
From what I could gather, the movie is still a priority for the studio, and if the script meets with approval from key people, the movie could go into production in 2010 with a release date in 2011. Also, this isn’t going to be some mid-range budget movie. If the film goes into production, it’s going to be one of those BIG event movies.
While I wasn’t a huge fan of the Manga animation, which has aged quite badly, the core of the story is truly mind boggling – this will DEFINATELY be one hell of a cinematic event – and hopefully for all the right reasons!
