The new romantic comedy, Couples Retreat has taken the US box office by storm this weekend, having made an estimated $35.3 million during opening weekend. It’s released here in the UK on Wednesday (October 14th) and in my opinion is definitely worth going to see!
The movie is a comedy centred around four couples who settle into a tropical-island resort for a vacation. The film stars Hollywood heartthrob Vince Vaughn as a character called Dave, whilst Sex and the City star Kristin Davis stars as Lucy.
One of the couples, Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) has marriage problems and wants to go on an expensive therapeutic vacation to try and heal their relationship, however not being able to afford the cost along, they talk their friends into going along with them to take advantage of the “group rate”.
Jason and Cynthia promise their friends that they can have all the fun, and not have to do the therapy part of the trip if they go. But when they get there, they come to realize that they all have to participate in the couple’s therapy sessions, in order to stay on the island.
They also realize that they had problems they were unaware of, after talking with the island therapists. It starts to cause tension among the group, but in the end, a retreat over to the singles side of the island ironically helped bring them all back together.
Whilst promoting the new movie, Vince Vaughn has insisted that acting in comedies is more difficult than in dramas. He said:
“The job of an actor is to look like you’re not acting. Sometimes I think people are impressed by extreme emotions….People go, ‘That must be powerful because you’re crying’. But, that would make everyone’s crazy aunt a great actor.
“So I’ve always felt the real thing to do is make it effortless. Like any performer in music, on stage they look effortless, but there’s a lot of work that goes into looking effortless. The same thing applies for the dialogue with comedies. Comedies are much more difficult, especially when they’re story comedies, rather than drama.”
Vince Vaughn is about to embark on his own romance story, as he is about to get married to his fiancée Kyla Webber. In previous years, Vaugh’s love life has faced past scrutiny, when tabloids speculated that he was thought to be dating Jennifer Aniston after they filmed the movie ‘The Break Up’.
But as for Couples Retreat, it has had some great reviews, with many saying it’s delightfully funny and definitely worth a view. So make sure you get along, and let us know what you thought here on Filmshaft.
