Torchwood Update – Captain Jack Is Back

Published on December 2, 2009 by Craig Sharp   ·   View Comments

Captain-Jack-HarknessWhen Captain Jack last graced our screens in Torchwood: The Children of Earth, things were not what you might call “rosy.” He had caused the death of his own grandson, his partner, Ianto was dead and his daughter had all but disowned him for putting others before his own grandchild. The solution to these small hurdles was for Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), to leave Earth, leaving fans wondering if they’d ever see him again.

The good news is that Barrowman has confirmed recent reports that Torchwood would be back for a fourth season…and so will Captain Jack!

“I don’t know about Capt. Jack’s future in ‘Doctor Who,’ because nothing has been said or I haven’t been asked. I’m kind of prepared that I won’t be in any of it, which is fine, but ‘Torchwood,’ we are discussing the future of ‘Torchwood’ because most definitely ‘Torchwood’ will come back to the BBC.”

The news that Barrowman might not be making a return to Doctor Who is no real surprise. With David Tennant bowing out this Christmas after 3 seasons and a series of specials, newcomer to the role, Matt Smith with have plenty on his plate before the supporting cast event get a look-in. Perhaps Jack could make a return in 2011?

Back on the subject of Torchwood, Barrowman also seemed certain that the BBC were dropping the 5 episode miniseries format in favour of a full 13 episode season:

“We’re not sure when” it will happen, he continued. “We need to work out the logistics of the filming, but it will be 13 episodes rather than five.”

As always check back for more Torchwood/Doctor Who news, oh and I’d expect series 5 to hit UK screens no later that Summer 2011, although here’s hoping for 2010!

HUZZAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh I am SOOOO HAPPY it's coming back I am one of the fans that thought Season 3 was UTTERLY FANTASTIC, I mean come on people the writing for Children of Earth pushed the characters SO FAR that the fans got upset! Rule of thumb to good writing… if it affects you emotionally (whether it be a good emotion or a bad emotion) Its wonderful writting.

The writing for Children of Earth was rubbish with so many plot holes that you could drive the Dalek fleet through them. If Jack is the same loser that we were shown at the end of the series, or if it's good old Excalibur with a different name, I'm sorry, count me out.

I like Torchwood alot but there really isn't much use continuing it with just Jack and a pregnant Gwen, even if Martha or another Companion comes in it won't be the same without Ianto, the dynamic between the three (or just Jack/Ianto) cannot be replaced in my eyes and thats what made the storyline so good.

I for one am looking forward to how they bring Captn Jack back to Earth. In the final Dr. Who show, you see Jack in an alien bar sitting alone and he gets a note from the Doctor, introducing Alonso who comes up and stands beside Jack. – Alonso was the first mate in the Dr Who show about the Titanic. Perhaps they saddle up and return to earth. In any case, new character's create new stories. I just wish they would get Jack back into more leather.
