Torchwood Season 4 – Coming 2010

Published on November 13, 2009 by Craig Sharp   ·   View Comments

Russell-T-DaviesBack in August we spotted an interview with “Doctor Who” and “Torchwood” Godfather, Russel T. Davis in which the writer/director hinted at what could be to come in season four of the popular Doctor Who spinoff.

Now, talking to TV Guide Magazine, Davies reveals that he hopes to begin developing season 4 of Torchwood in January 2010!

“The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We’ve got great ideas for the show. I think there’s a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season].”

Torchwood: Children of Earth was a massive success when screened earlier this year, however the dark overtones and the death of popular character Ianto Jones have split fans down the middle, many of whom have accused Davies of getting too big for his boots. One FilmShaft reader said:

RTD destroyed Torchwood in an exercise of pure vanity to show US bosses that he was a tough writer. Well screw him and any season 4. It was bad enough to lose Owen and Tosh, but the killing of Ianto was too much.

It remains to be seen whether John Barrowman will return as Captain Jack Harkness, given his shock exit in Children of Earth, after causing the death of his own Grandson, however many fans speculate that we may see the return of one or two of the Doctor’s assistants in order to plug the gaps.

SHE WAS AMAZING AS THE 'DOCTORS ASSISSTANT' MAYBE EVEN THE DOCTOR THAT IS HUMAN COULD JOIN THEM SEEING THAT HE IS THE DOCTOR!!!!

ANYWAY, ROSE NEEDS TO HAVE A PART, I LOVE HER!!!!!!!

  2. dorchwood :D says:

OMg yer they should bring lady christina back like uz she fell into the thingy on the cruse and the could like be like a rift thingy so she could fall through the rift into cardiff lol soz if thts confusing :P

  3. dorchwood:D says:

lol the'll have to get a britsh person to play jack casue in the UK one (best one eva always will be:) )jack had an american accent so it just wont work if he has a american accent in the american one :P

  4. Dorchwood :D says:

yea he is an original just like he's actor John Barrowman :D <3

  5. Dorchwood :D says:

The brits do a better job then u americans and besides its set in cardiff and cardiff is in england and if u trty and re create it in America then it will just suck balls and wont be as realistic gosh (btw i aint british im Australian and even i know tht)

  6. Dorchwood says:

    Exatly

  7. Dorchwood says:

yer totally BUT jack has to be played by john Barrowman

  8. Dorchwood says:

darl they cant have rose shes a bit unavailible takeing care of the other doctor but true true

  9. Rhiannaaxo says:

You are absolutely right. I mean, I love the show, and I completely agree that Russell deserved to have some arrogance. And that's true. Just because Ianto died, It doesn't mean that we have seen then end of him, does it? I think that if the producers of Torchwood do decide to make a new series, it could be potentially very promising in the new characters department, and I don't think we have seen the end of Ianto Jones at all

  10. Rhiannaaxo says:

Because the doctor wanted to go check on all the people that he loved, and make sure that they turned out ok. I think it was sweet really

  11. Rhiannaaxo says:

Hey you silly little yank, I think you'll find it's your country who have ruined just about every british show going, good or not. You should feel priveledged that any british TV actually plays over there at all, without idiotic yank tv producers remaking it so it's american. So stop fucking complaining. We are the ones who should be complaining, but whenever a brit has the guts to say something, all we hear is moan moan moan from you, so seriously. Stfu.

  12. Zeveganmuffin says:

i dont really want to watch torchwood without ianto but if there is a season 4 i will watch stupidly waiting for ianto to come back

  13. Aiicyla says:

I completely agree with almost everyone here… Ianto dying was probably the stupidest move for this show. It totally pissed off like 98% of the Torchwood fans.
If there is a Season Four, nobody will watch it if there isn't a chance for Ianto coming back. I know I wouldn't. He was my favorite, the only reason I really watched the show..

But hey, you guys mentioning a new team. Did you all forget about Jenny? The Doctor's son? She'd be a HELL of an awesome Torchwood member. Although she should be travelling through time and space, not staying on Earth… I just hope to see more of her. She's totally my favorite Doctor Who character, even if she was only in one episode or so.

But NOBODY, at ALL, can play Jack besides JB. NO ONE. Unless you find his amazingly talented [[American or Scottish, since Jack's American anyways]] identical twin, John must be Jack. Derp.

  14. Dj_kib says:

You know with the end of Doctor Who series 5, everything was reset. Could this help out in the end for Torchwood. Could we see some people that had died in the past…..

  15. Ani says:

I love Torchwood, but I need Ianto, he`s the heart of the show. Please, bring him back. I don`t want to see Jack with anyone else. Please. :-(

  16. Goofenhimer says:

Ya, god when Ianto died I cried so much. I have to say though I am seriously torn about them bringing him back, I mean he was a great character, but all this flexibility about death. Death is final, and even though the show involves major themes of resurection etc. sometimes I feel they should have more respect about the finality of death. They can bring Ianto back, but I think bringing back the old team would be a mistake, and including Jenny would also be a problem. I think it should have ended with her shooting jack before she leave, and then we hear another gun shot. THis leaves room for us to ponder her fate…Did she kill herself or did she kill someone else? Also she has emotionally gone thorugh so much I doubt she could ever work sucessfully with jack. Martha two could not sucessfully rejoin, to much history with torchwoods old members

Damn straight no one can replace john barrowman as jack! The cast they had was great, the three series were so well scripted and acted I can't waqit to see if they can pull of a fourth season. I loved to entire series and hope they don't ruin it bye doing something as boneheadidly stupid as getting rid of jack.

  17. Erecabay says:

YES! I was stranded over seas for a few years and first saw torchwood on the BBC it was on to late though, and I had an early start to my mornings, so I never got a chance to see it. Interestingly enough it was when visiting my aunt I finally had a chance to watch. I monopolized the TV for an hour watching most of season two, and as soon as I got established in my new house I watched all the seasons on Netflix. I had previously become addicted to Dr.Who, and this is a great tie in. I tried despratley to get the actual BBC here in america, because frankly while america has a million channels in american, they all have crap on them, and all I need is two channels with genuinley great series. Torchwood touched, and I could not help but cry multiple times while watching. I cannot wait for the fourth season and despratley hope they bring Ianto back. I think it was a his undying loyalty to those he was attached to that really made him a great character. Gwen just can't match him on this level, though she does have great people skills. I think john barrowman is nescesary for the series to continue in popularity. Russel does deserve more credit. We rail on him about killing of major characters, but who did not cry as they watch tosh try to hide her pain as she spoke to owen, trying to comfort him as they both died? Who did'nt break down when Ianto spoke and jack asked him to save his breath. It Davies can keep writing this caliber of work I see no reason the fourth season should fail, and I eagerly await it. If the death scenes continue to truly move people, let the grim reaper's blade swing on. I must say I really really hope Ianto comes back. Capt. John can't come back to work for torchwood though, you just can't have two men in military coats on the same show consistently.

  18. Goofenhimer says:

YOu know, there is one option about bringing Ianto back. They have already establish the problems about resurestion, but wahat about time travel? They should have matt smith's appeareance on the show and bringing Ianto back would be a possibilty with the Dr. back in the picture. We could find out the consequences of reliving the past, or retriving a living person form it. They have already discussed circumstances where history can change in the new docter with thos repto sapien episodes, what if Iantos death was on of thise points in time where you could change what happened? I think a new team is in order though. I think it would really breathe some life into the show. I want more episodes like Countrycide though. I loved how they assumed the deaths were caused by aliens but saw that their own race was the culprit all along. It sent shivers down my spine when that guy leaneed forward and whispered “because it makes me happy”

  19. Goofenhimer says:

You got that right. From what I can gather most US scifi show are about women with breast implants. BBC pays more attention to plot and character building. As I mentioned before, I would rather have BBCC one and BBC two than a million more channels. It's not just scifi they ruin, it's everything.name one American BBC apaptation that has been better than the original, don't fix it if it's not broken!

  20. Goofenhimer says:

They can't use the resurection glove again, jack never would after what happened with owen. As I said, I think they could have Ianto's death in flux, think about it, it would fix everything, as I said this would also be agreat oppurtunity to discuss what happen when a previous history is changed, I think if it is changed then either that lady Ha bee something could die, along with the layd who kept trying to kill jack…she could be killed by his daughter, he could be temporarily killed by her to. Also, why do you all keep railing on poor matt smith, my friends in the doctor who club agreethat his take on the doctoe while not as intense, is still good. If you wanted him to be like david tennant, then you might as well forget about it because he is no. THe mood is much lighter, but still serious, I cried watching the van gogh episode (I have been crying allot latley) And while i love and respect david tennant, I also think the new one is great.

  21. Goofenhimer says:

Actually cardiff is in wales, but you have a point, it's british so iit stay in england.

  22. Foxglove says:

    Death at a Funeral!

Wow, that was a bad joke. Sorry.

  23. Gaselle says:

I don't really think he (Davies) earned big britches when I remember the three seasons he wrote. I thought they were fantastic then, though some episodes got boring due to boring plots. Martha didn't get a vast amount of interesting episodes. Seeing the magic that Moffat brought to Season 5 made Davies look like tripe garbage IMO. I should have expected no less, as Moffat was responsible for many of the most amazing episodes throughout the first part of New Who. Who could forget Blink or Silence in the Library?

  24. Gaselle says:

Firefly =(. I put off watching it for years because I was pre-warned about the bad kind of cliff-hanger ending it got when it was cancelled. It's excellent. Need more of THAT coming back!

  25. J0057 says:

glad fox didnt take part – if the networks get hold of torchwood it'll be watered down with american values and american story telling – Let it stay British, thast way i watch it on BBC America because its nothing like what we have in the states. Gay lead, Kick ass female support, sincere relationships with the characters and great writing. Mini season 3 was some of the best television ever.

  26. luka says:

keep torchwood british please i beg you..i so miss lanto and tosh….other than jack thy were my favorite….don't let that hunk of a man jack go….he is the brains and be be funny too..i wouldn't miss gwen if she got ax….please keep it british.

  27. Michael says:

Watching Ianto died is really killing me. That's really too much. And you know what? That Russell even said that nothing was gonna change his mind! What makes him hate Ianto that much. Not even give us a hope about respecting Ianto's revival. That's really cruel! I end up crying every time I watch fan-made videos for Janto. Please, bring Ianto back! I don't know if I'll have enough courage watching season 4…

  28. Ronjaquar says:

They Ianto back because Capt Jack Kissed him so he could have passed on some saliva with Jacks DNA and Jacks son could come back as he has the same DNA. Its just an idea.
    From Ronald

  29. Samm says:

I love this show! I dont know why people are dissing it. I watched all of them in 2 months. I think hes doing really good, and its better then alot of our (american) TV shows. I didnt like that Ianto died and tosh and Owen, but still. sometimes TV shows just need something big to happen.

  30. Firebirdracer says:

Why in america starz networks have to carry it isent that why theres bbc america????????
