Kenneth Branagh’s comic book movie, Thor, is well underway at Marvel’s Manhattan Beach Studios in Los Angeles. And to celebrate, the studio, along with Paramount, have released the official movie synopsis to keep up us all up-to-date and excited.
There’s an amazing cast playing key roles including giant Christmas ham Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Samuel L Jackson, Idris Elba and Kat Dennings. We’ll have to wait and see what this looks like but it could be great, no? And since Spider-Man 4 was derailed by Sony, Thor nabbed the Webbed Wonder’s release date: 06th May, 2011.
“Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, Thor, which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.”
So what does this tell us about Branagh’s direction and ideas? Not much, but the man’s Shakespearean clout will make Thor a bit different from other comic book movies (it’s probably the reason he got hired). Judging from the synopsis, a vast majority of the story takes place on our planet and not Asgard. Is that disappointing? Who knows! I’m expecting Branagh’s interpretation to be thoroughly Wagnerian…and Shakespearean.
