The Howling Returns!

thehowlingAre monster movies back? Hot on the heels of The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Universal’s The Wolfman, Variety now reports 1980s horror classic The Howling is gearing up for a remake. Talk about striking whilst the iron’s hot! Filming starts in February for a Halloween release.

Joe Dante’s 1981 original (written by indie auteur John Sayles) was a wry, tongue-in-cheek venture with some super-creepy moments. The 2010 version is going under the title of The Howling: Reborn.

As is the rule of thumb in Hollywood, the franchise soon descended into a plethora of sequels with diminishing creativity. However if the new filmmakers (Dante and Sayles are not involved) stay true to the original and don’t CGI all the creature effects, The Howling: Reborn might be an interesting undertaking.

Could 2010 be the year of the wolf? It remains to be seen. The Wolfman, like a wounded monster, is limping to our screens in early 2010. Let’s hope The Howling does not suffer a premature silver bullet. Expect casting news and production stills to follow. This could be a great reason to venture out to the cinemas next Halloween (traditionally the home of the never-ending Saw series).

Joe Nimziki is making his directorial debut with the creature feature.
