Sam Raimi On Spider-Man 4 Villain

Those clever guys n gals over at MTV ran a poll recently, asking readers to choose their ideal villain for Spider-Man 4, due to go into production in the New Year. Top of the list was Dr. Curt Connors (a.k.a. The Lizard) with 29% of the vote. Next up was Venom’s symbiote ‘cousin’, Carnage with 26%, but what did director Sam Raimi make of their results? And would he give anything away during their discussion?

“I love the Lizard,” said Raimi. “There’s a great story there in the Marvel comic books about Dr. Connors. I’m less familiar with Carnage.”

Raimi then took a long pause. “I’m not allowed to say at this point,” he confessed.

There has been much rumour-mongering and speculation around the subject of Spider-Man 4′s villain, with further suggestions of Kraven the Hunter and Michael Morbius among others being tapped for the film. Sadly, Sony and the man behind the franchise, Sam Raimi, are not yet ready to show their hand. With Gary Ross still working out the script it is still very early in the production process, however Raimi had no qualms impressing upon MTV the importance of their villain choice:

“What we’re trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome,” Raimi said. “Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain—and we’re trying this right now; we’re trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict.”

So with Raimi not yet ready to unveil his baddie, I assume the speculation will continue. Still it could be worse, we could be talking about Justice League of America instead…
