Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have bought the rights to “Twilight Saga” creator, Stephenie Meyer’s first adult novel – THE HOST.
The producer, who made the purchase with their own money, are obviously hoping that some of the Twilight magic will rub off on them with the property, which is a love story set in the near future on Earth. In the story, the Earth’s population have been assimilated by alien parasites that call themselves “souls”.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon is the second big screen adaptation of Meyer’s hugely popular vampire series, it’s due out in theatres this November and pre-ticket sales sold out at most venues more than 9 week’s before the film’s release. The question here is: with Twilight aimed at the teenage market, how can it’s success transfer to this adult-orientated story?
Obviously unless there’s a PG-13 attached to the picture, the film will be out of reach of most Twi-Hards – presuming they’ll want to see it in the first place, so the story will have to stand up in it’s own right. In all honesty it’s doubtful that The Host will find the kind of commercial success that the Twilight series has enjoyed, few films will, however I’ll be interested to see how this material differs from the aforementioned vampire romance.
Andrew Niccol has been attached to write and direct the picture, so hopefully it shouldn’t be too long before we hear more on Meyer’s latest film adaptation.
