New Moon Director’s Response To Reviews: “Some people don’t get it”
I’m assuming that Chris Weitz isn’t talking about our reviews for The Twilight Saga: New Moon (which, incidentally can be found here and here). However, the New Moon and “The Golden Compass” director has indeed addressed the negative reviews for his sharp-fanged flick which have swamped the net since the movie’s release on 20th November.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, Weitz had a very simply explanation for why certain critics were not taken with Edward, Bella and co:
The tracking numbers were enough to indicate that I wouldn’t be letting the studio down. But if one could imagine their biggest fears, it would be complete rejection of the movie, by the fans. What I’ve realized over the last week is I won’t necessarily get good reviews for this movie. Having swallowed that, this was made for the fans, and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.
Going on to talk about his experiences making the film, Weitz was asked about his favourite moments directing the cast, including Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart:
The highs were the moments of real identification with the actors. With Taylor, the moments early on when he realized he was going to do it. That was very gratifying to me…
..When he jumps into Bella’s room. There is so much pathos there even though it’s melodrama, there’s something touching about it. Or maybe the last moment he has, just when he says Bella’s name. You sort of understand just how crushed he is at that moment. There are a few times where he’s absolutely that guy and it’s really lovely. He’s that guy for the fans and that’s what I always thought he could do.
It seems like it was inevitable that New Moon was going to hit a wall with film critics, the source material is after all so far removed from anything they’d consider to be good cinema that positive reception was never going to happen. I am not an actual New Moon fan myself, but at some point the media and the press need to realise that this film was never for me, or them, it was for the fans this is exactly why I had my brother review the film, because I knew he’d appreciate it for exactly what it was and not what others thought it should be.
These films are never going to be to everyone’s taste but lets be honest, they’re doing perfectly well without the tubby middle-aged demographic that most film critics seem to fall into anyway aren’t they?
