Let The Hobbit Rumours Begin!

lotr-sauronRemember when The Hobbit was originally announced? Remember when they said it would be two movies and one of them might act as a “bridge” between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings? Well we’ve since learned that the two movies will in fact be covering The Hobbit as is, in other words no additional bridge movie to cover the 60 year gap between stories. Or so we thought.

A major rumour has kicked off regarding a mythical “third film,” which will in fact bridge the two part Hobbit story and elaborate on events that don’t really get a lot of page time in the original material. What events you ask? Oh nothing much, just the return of the Dark Lord in Mirkwood, The White Council and the fall of Minas Morgul. These events are pivotal to the story and serve to set up The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and yet they’ve only ever been given a few sparse pages in the very back of the Appendices.

The source of the rumour is Jim at MarketSaw – a dedicated 3D Movie site. According to Jim:

Got some interesting HOBBIT news for you. The information I am sharing is from one of my most trusted sources and so you can rely quite a bit on it despite being very early in the production of THE HOBBIT(s).

  1. THE HOBBIT(s) will be in stereoscopic 3D.
  2. THE HOBBIT will be shot in THREE movies – two Del Toro movies covering the book itself and a third bridge movie.
  3. Peter Jackson will direct the bridge movie.
  4. Smaug and the characters in THE HOBBIT will be darker than in the book.

The fact that the characters would be darker was pretty obvious to begin with, and as for the third, bridge movie, while I would love it to be true I find it very hard to believe. Sure there is a story there that needs to be told, but it would take a LOT of original writing to pull it off (i.e. not based on the source material) and I’m not sure the Tolkein estate would ever allow that.

Chalk this one up as a big, fire breathing rumour for now. I’ll let you know if anything ever comes of it!
