It was never going to work, was it? Yes, it was funny. Whenever you muttered it or said it aloud: “A Couple of Dicks.” And no, it wasn’t a sequel to Smith’s Zack and Miri Make A Porno. The dicks is a reference to private detectives. So now, the film has been castrated of its title and shall be dickless. Via Twitter, Smith announced:

“The Movie Formerly Known as A Couple Of Dicks has finally settled on a (network-policy-dictated) replacement title! While we’ll always have Dicks in our hearts, the title we just now locked makes me smile on a bunch of different levels – including this 1: we can now advertise our movie properly (& ironically). And said marketing begins… on every print of Sherlock Holmes, Christmas Day!”

For added marketing and anticipation Smith is not revealing the new title quite yet, saying:

“That kinda thing’s above my pay-grade, sir. WB will announce in a day or two.”

Smith has always been a director who gets by on making people laugh. He created two icons in Jay and Silent Bob, but his films outside the View Askewniverse have not always been so great. For the record, this writer actually enjoyed Jersey Girl.

There have also been reports of friction between Smith and Bruce Willis during filming. Whether the new film is a post-Christmas turkey or a laugh riot remains to be seen. Interestingly, Smith also commented on Twitter that this is not his film, but a film he was hired to make. That does not bode well. Nevertheless, Smith has a legion of fans who will turn out for anything he makes. And long may it continue.
