There are some things that requite double-takes upon reading them. There are other things that seem so unlikely, that they blind-side you with their sheer perversity and potential greatness. Such a thing has happened. English actress Keira Knightley has signed up to star in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure.
The Playlist also report Michael Fassbender and his Inglourious Basterds co-star, Christoph Waltz are on board. The Talking Cure is a story involving two of the most influential psychoanalysts in history: Sigmund Freud and Karl Jung. It is also an adaptation of Christopher Hampton’s play. The last time the Canadian horror merchant looked at the subject matter of psychoanalysis – he delivered The Brood. Whilst the body horror elements have, in recent years, been subdued Cronenberg is still producing interesting work. Knightley is no doubt playing the beautiful patient of the pyschoanalysts. Whether she externalises her neuroses, produces little evil minions…is probably not going to happen. No doubt, they will find Knightley’s character hysterical (not as in ‘funny’). This is definitely one for the art-house, but with Knightley starring, could pique the curiosity of the mainstream.
Filming begins early next year.
