Speaking about his upcoming starring role in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor Johnny Depp has revealed that he was fascinated by his character, the iconic Mad Hatter. The film, Depp and Burton’s seventh collaboration together is released later this year. In it, Depp features alongside an all-star cast including Mia Wasikowska, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry and Michael Sheen.
Speaking at a recent interview, Depp said of his quirky character:
“I started reading the books and understanding the character and the significance of the letter M. There’s a moment when he says, ‘I’m investigating things that begin with the letter M’. That was huge for me. Hatters were referred to as mad because of the mercury they used to use in the glue. Mercury was the M. I found that fascinating.”
However, the actor and father of two admitted that he found the whole process quite exhausting due to the fact that much of the work involved the use of green screens:
“It beats you up,” he revealed. “You’re kind of befuddled at the end of the day.”
