Ghost Rider 2 Revs Up Again
It’s been a year since I screamed in sheer horror at the terrible prospect of a Ghost Rider sequel, and with all quiet on the home front since then I’d assumed we were safe from another sub-par outing for the cult Marvel character.
Unfortunately for me, and those of you who also though that Mark Steven Johnson’s 2007 flop Ghost Rider was a big pile of doodoo, Variety has announced that Columbia Pictures are once again gearing up for the sequel!
David Goyer is in early talks to put together the story and supervise the writers for the project, which is expected to once again star Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, the stunt biker possessed with the vengeful spirit of the Ghost Rider. According to Variety:
“Ghost Rider” will be produced by former Marvel topper Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul, with Gary Foster executive producer.
The activity on “Ghost Rider” follows a flurry of activity on Marvel characters at almost every studio but Disney, which acquired Marvel Entertainment in a $4 billion deal.
The activity is necessary for those studios to keep the superhero properties. If the properties atrophy, they can be reclaimed by Marvel Entertainment, which happened with such properties as Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Iron Man, the latter of which languished at New Line before Marvel turned it into the self-financed blockbuster.
To some, the news that Ghost Rider is riding back into theatres will be good news, but I can’t help but feeling that without a drastic overhaul and change in tone, the sequel will end up being just as terrible as the original. Just a thought.
