News shmews. When a project is good, it’s good. And this seems to be the case with the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp project, DARK SHADOWS. News originally broke last year that the pair would be reuniting for a big screen adaptation of the popular horror series and I’ve since pinned my hopes on the project getting off of the ground.
For those who are unaware, Dark Shadows was a Gothic soap opera that originally ran on the ABC network from 1966 to 1971. What began as a relatively benign Gothic romp hit cult status when writers added vampire and soon-to-be central character, Barnabus Collins into the mix – the perfect role for one Mr. Depp.
Burton and Depp have both said since the initial announcement that the plan was to shoot the film in 2010, however a number of additional projects suggested that Shadows might have to take a back seat. However the good news for vamp fans is that producer, Graham King has confirmed that the shoot will be going ahead. This from Sci-fi Wire:
“We’re actually going to shoot that film next September/October with Tim Burton and Johnny,” King said in a group interview Friday in Los Angeles, where he was promoting The Young Victoria.
Burton is still finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland, which also stars Depp and opens March 5, 2010. King is already prepping production on Dark Shadows with screenwriters so that it is ready for Burton to shoot next fall.
“We’ve been working on the script a lot, even though he’s working on Alice,” King continued. “We’ve been given a script. John August wrote the first screenplay. We’re making some changes, but the film’s going to be in production, as I say, September or October of next year.”
When it comes to vampire films, Edward Cullen and the New Moon cast can stand aside, Dark Shadows (as far as I’m concerned), should have been made long ago, and with Tim Burton behind the camera and Johnny Depp in front of it, it should be a damn good outing indeed!
