Could Jeremy Renner Be Hawkeye In Marvel’s AVENGERS?

Jeremy Renner HawkeyeWith Iron Man 2, Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America both waiting in the wings it’s easy to forget Marvel Studios’ grander plan to have all of their big screen heroes united in The Avengers, a movie of epic proportions. However that’s precisely what Empire were reminded of when they spoke recently to “The Hurt Locker” actor, Jeremy Renner.

Asking the actor if he would be joining the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johanssonas Captain America, Renner took the interview in an entirely different direction when a certain purple archer was name-dropped into the conversation:

“I don’t know if I’d be right for Captain America,” said the 38 year old actor, who’d previously been linked with the role of Cap on that there internet. “I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character.”

It’s fair to say that while Hawkeye is a long-standing Avenger in the comicbook series, the character is certainly one of the lesser known contenders and it never really occurred to me that Hawkeye (otherwise known as Clint Barton) would be making an appearance. According to Empire and Renner himself, Marvel are likely to introduce the character with cameos in upcoming projects – much like Nick Fury in Iron Man. Renner himself contemplated the idea in his interview:

“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers,” he said. “But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”

I’d be more than happy to see Hawkeye appear in an Avengers movie and indeed in cameos also. After all, while Marvel certainly need to concentrate on those characters that are saleable, it’s important not to detract too far from the source material and keep a few of the Avengers proper in the film (apart from Cap who was always a given).

While it’s definitely far from confirmed that Renner will be handling bow and arrow duties it’s certainly food for thought, and of course after a successful Avengers film there’s always the option that Hawkeye could branch out into his own franchise…
