Avatar has yet to hit screens and there’s been much speculation surrounding James Cameron’s next eye-melter. The King of the World gave MTV a bit of a teaser this week regarding Battle Angel Alita, when he said:
“We’ve got a very good script, we’ve done about a year of production design, and we’ve put together an art reel that shows the arc of the film. It’s pretty much ‘just add water’ and we’re ready to go.”
As fans of the bearded sci-fi groundbreaker know ‘Battle Angel Alita’ has been a long-time project and obsession. So it is good to hear we’ll be seeing it some time in the future. After ‘Avatar’, it is a mouth-watering prospect to see what vision of the future he’ll birth next. Let’s hope the script doesn’t stink as much as his latest movie (see our review). As Battle Angel Alita isn’t an original Cameron story, so hopes can remain high. The film is based on a Manga series from the 1990s and centres on a cyborg with amnesia (great concept!) who becomes a bounty hunter. How will Cameron approach the filmmaking this time? Cameron said:
“Shooting live stuff in 3-D and then adding CG characters and landscapes beyond that is a little tricky.”
Could this be a return to purely live-action settings? He didn’t answer. Perhaps all the CG and 3-D was too much of a headache for the man. What ever he decides, it will no doubt blow our minds.
