A Paranormal Activity Sequel Already?!

Paranormal ActivityParanormal Activity, that small budget, cult film that has become an undisputed smash-hit may already have a sequel waiting in the wings!

This weekend Paranormal took the U.S. box office by storm, cutting SAW VI short and taking an estimated $22 million. Now it seems that the execs at Paramount Pictures have begun to pay attention, and they’re “actively considering producing a sequel” according to the LA Times Blog.

Could a sequel work? Isn’t there a danger that we might end up with another Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2? Either way it doesn’t seem that the “Blair Witch” concept has occurred to Paramount Chairman, Brad Grey. Interviewed yesterday, Grey was certainly succinct when asked about the possibility of a sequel:

“We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do ‘Paranormal 2′ and we’re looking to see if that makes some sense.”

The success of Paranormal Activity has been relentless. Picked up by Paramount for a paltry $300,000, the movie has taken on a viral quality all of it’s own, and now it seems to be heading towards the magic $100 million mark domestically.

So should such a successful film be followed up with a sequel? Surely the process itself risks tainting the original with the cynical “franchise” feeling that almost all Hollywood productions now carry? It’s early days yet, and Paranormal has still to enjoy a worldwide release. No doubt once all is said and done, the money alone will be enough to convince Paramount to milk the film’s success for all they can get.

The word you are looking for is 'paltry', not 'poultry'. A 'poultry $300,000' would be a lot of chickens.

You are absolutely right of course, although I'm now wondering what $300,000 worth of poultry would look like.
